Thanks for helping get my 87 Marathon running great
Thanks to every one for all the help I got fixing my 1987 ezgo marathon.
I got the cart from my father in law $600.00 and it was ruff. Gave it a paint job and put herculiner on the floor(rubber mat was shot) new headlights and led tail lights, and back diamond plat mud flaps. I took the air filter off and the dirt just fell out. I gave it a tune up fuel lines, fuel filter, air filter, spark plug and brake cables(had no brakes). It was running OK and the oil pump stoped working and burned the piston. So I did a new top end and took the oil pump off and whent to mix gas. Got all together and had power to pull my 18' speed boat around. But when you would go fast it would boog down and take a little to get going again. I cleaned the carb BBQ the muffler and still boog down. After a month or so the drive clutch got stuck closed. I got a new clutch and seen the crank seal behind the fly wheel was gone. Got new crank seals and driven clutch cover(so I could hook the governor back up). With new clutch and seals I got the shorter belt(dayco HP3004). Took it for a ride and could not believe the power and how awesome it ran(just whent no booging down). I when to a hill I could not get up before and the cart climb right up no problem at all. Go it all fixed and running great just in time for hunting season. Thanks again for everyones Help |

Your thanks is appreciated. Nice job with the cart, the 80's series looks much nicer when it is jacked up and doesn't that HP3004 make a difference? Enjoy the fruit of your labor.

Re: Thanks for helping get my 87 Marathon running great
The shocks are the ones that were on it when I got the cart. They say on them Gabriel Red Ryder Gas(I think cheap shocks). The front ate 16" long bracket to bracket and the backs are 14" center to center.
Dave you are right the Dayco hp3004 belt is one of the best proformence improvements I made. Would the HEI conversion make a different or not so much? |

Bummer I was hoping for parts numbers. I want to get rid of the shock extenders and go with longer shocks to get more travel.

Re: Thanks for helping get my 87 Marathon running great
I did the HEI conversion (as well as upgrading to a high-output coil) and definitely noticed an improvement in power and accelleration over the stock setup (88 2pg). The spark that this setup puts out is FAR stronger than the stock setup was, so I'm going to chalk it up to more efficient and/or complete combustion - no word yet on plug life, etc though however I can say that the cart has about 60hrs on it since the conversion and the plug is still going strong
