Default steering wheel suddenly out of alignment

One of our Club Car "Carry All" carts here was brought in by it's operator with the complaint of the steering wheel being upside down. this bothered him because he had to clip his work orders upside down on the steering wheel clipboard now. The issue is that the day before the wheel was in it's correct position. One of the carpenters had taken the cart without permission, and had done something to it. I looked at the tie rods, and rack/pinion set, and everything looks normal. My question is this, is it possible for the rack and pinion to skip a tooth somehow, like if the cart hit a curb hard enough to pull the rack past the last tooth, but then be able to reengage with the pinion, and act like nothing had happened? The cart has a lot of wear in general, but the steering is not sloppy. Anyone here seen something like this before?

It only skips a tooth if it over extends. It only over extends if the shock tower is bent. Look carefully at the back of the shock tower where the rack bolts to it. It's probably twisted.

Interesting, my new to me cart had a steering wheel in the same position, guess I better take a look at my shock tower too. Hope it's an easy fix if so!

Yep, mine's bent slightly too, not too bad but I can see it now that Tahoe told us where to look.

Replace it. Part number 1016385. Also replace the inner ball joint on the rack. Part number 101880201. 9 times out of 10 it's bent too. On 1996 and prior models they used a different inner ball joint and it's no longer available. You must change the entire steering rack in this case.

You were right on the money Tahoe, of course the inner ball joint was bent as well! My local dealer stocks the shock support & inner ball joint, I guess you could call that the Club Car crash package, thanks for the heads up, you saved me some frustration down the road I'm sure.

Do you have a list of parts for us 96 and older carts who need to replace the entire steering rack?

Thanks
