G16 low power going uphill -> Need help troubleshooting

I'd dump some premium in there to mix with the gas, and some seafoam. Most issue with old gas is gunk or lack of octane. Though GC are made to run on sub standard fuel anyway. I usually just give gas the smell test for low power things, and if it does not pass I burn it in my lawnmower anyway lol. It takes it all unless it smells like paint thinner.....but these days I don't exactly leave gas sitting around. I find with small engines its just best to run them out of gas if you can, or at least run or drain the carb dry for storage. But over winter I never have problems only if I store longer than that.

Check your secondary and maybe someone put it together wrong. The spring must have preload on it. If you take the belt off, the spring should push the ramps together, you can turn it away from the ramps by hand. If no pressure there then they did not preload it. Excepting a G1 it has no preload. Or it has an aftermarket spring with no ends on it, but those have much more pressure. If you turn stock spring you can also push it in (push the back sheave away from the front) by hand if you have a good grip on it. Put in gear and lock the brakes to do it. If aftermarket the spring will have lots of pressure to keep the sheaves clamped together but no pressure on the helix pads.

Thank you for the explaination about the secondary. Very helpful. I have checked the secondary and there is quite a bit of pressure on the side ramp. I could barely spread the two sides apart with a large wood dowel. I tried by hand and it was almost impossible. I am thinking that my spring my not be the problem.

Let me see what I can do about this gas... I already have new air and fuel filters, cleaned the carb, and a new spark plug.. Do I need to check my compression after I am done monkeying with the gas?

Ok - I ended up siphoning the gas tank dry and refilled it with some fresh 91 octane. It did the trick! Now doing 22 mph on flats. Going uphill is now a non issue. Thanks all for your inputs along the way!

Good deal! But FYI, 91 octane in a low compression Motor has no benefit.
