Default Yamaha G2 - need to find ignitor

Hello,

My G2 needs an ignitor... In the past I have gotten ones on eBay, but they say they are for a G9.. My problem is that they fail after about 1 summer of use...Does any one know the part number or if the G2 ignitor is available?

Thanks!

The problem is not that they are for a G9, the problem is that they are aftermarket. You need to find an OEM Yamaha ignitor, they're around $350 or so... Not the $80 ebay ones. Those are absolute junk. I went through several of them before I gave up and went with a Chrysler HEI conversion. I personally couldn't justify that kind of money just to make it spark. The chrysler trick cost me less than 30 bucks and I never had a problem after that. If the conversion isn't for you (it's not for everybody...) you can only hope to find one in the buy/sell section on the forum here somewhere from a member that has done a clone swap.

Agree with you, I have done two of the Chrysler parts conversion and for less than $30 both have not missed a beat since. very easy to do.

Well I went out and got the parts and put them in (module and ballast) ... Was easy to do, and I left the stock wiring intact..

After I installed the parts with the seat up, I hit the pedal with my hand just for a test and it fired right up and ran.

However, after I picked up some tools and hopped on for a ride, I hit the pedal and nothing! I couldn't believe it lol.

So I continued to diagnose it, and found that it would spark the moment I engage the foot pedal, and the moment I release it. - odd

Since I left the stock wiring in place, I plugged the aftermarket pos Chinese ignitor , and that was doing the same thing it did before, which was intermittent spark.

I double checked the wiring on the Chrysler module and it was good...Im wondering If somehow I may have burnt that new module, but seems unlikely. I'm a little stumped for now, Ill have to do more diagnosing tomorrow..

Usually 1 spark and then nothing is a bad coil.

Make sure the ignition module is grounded solid with a ring terminal and a bolt on the back side. The ignition module gets its ground in a car by mounting it to the frame.

If it is a coil, the nice thing about the conversion is you can use a $20 chrysler ignition coil, and a generic wire. Still a lot cheaper even with the entire package than just an oem coil...

Hey CP, finally got the cart running with the Chrysler module! The problem was the wiring from the pickup coil. What I did was snip the wires super close to the old igniter, with the idea of keeping the stock wiring intact... However, the signal from the pickup coil was not getting through that plug. So I just cut the harness off, and wired directly to the pickup coil wires.

It runs great Thanks for the help. I'm glad I didn't have to buy another Chinese junk ignitor, or spend tons of money for an oem one...

It does! I'm just happy to have it going... It was a frustrating few days trying to troubleshoot it My next thing is to find some led headlights for it.
