09 g29 spark plug is dry soot black
We're at the lake house for the next few weeks until Labor Day and my neighbor a few houses down has a bone stock 09 g29. Nothing has been touched not even the governor. His dealer services it every year but this year the cart is gonna stay at the lake house until next summer so I told him I would service the cart for him if he buys all the needed items.
I removed the spark plug and it's a ngk bpr2es which is what is recommended by yamaha. The cart runs fine but he said lately the exhaust fumes seem to smell stronger like there is a fuel richness about it. The plug last few threads and the electrode have a dry black soot color to it. A perfect running cart the electrode should be almond. Any ideas why it's looking so sooty. If this was the way the plug looked when the dealership was doing the service work they didn't tell him about it since the cart runs good. |

Re: 09 g29 spark plug is dry soot black
They have had there grandkids over all summer and I tell you they really creep around very slow. A lot of starting and stopping and just creeping along just barely enough for the cart to transition between the starter causing the cart to creep forward and when the engine actually fires to run the cart. This is what I have witnessed all morning from the patio.
I found this article online about sooty spark plugs. |

All that is true, but on a golf cart, just put it back in and drive it. The smell can be, either lugging it to much or cheap gas, or both. Just drive it!!

Yeah I brushed it off with a wire brush and and rag and reinstalled. Just out of curiosity I see online that some are using a bpr4es plug in the yamaha that burn a little hotter. Is there a reason for this?

I believe in ngk numbers "smaller # = hotter heat range". "Hotter" only means how easy it is to heat the plug into "self cleaning" temp ranges, this is a effect of how quickly the plug transfers its heat into the cylinder head.

Yes indeed after doing more reading up on spark plug numerical values. Ngk brp2es is a hotter plug than a brp4es and 5es. Soooooo, not sure what plug would be 1 step hotter than a 2es. Cart runs good though just has more rich smelling exhaust fumes than my 2013

Re: 09 g29 spark plug is dry soot black
I think you missed some of what im saying. Putting a "hotter" plug in it doesnt affect the fuel mixture, how completely, or how hot the fuel mixture burns. It affects the plug tip only. Too cold, the plug will foul, too hot & the plug tip could cause preignition (fuel mix igniting before the spark occurs). I dont subscribe to the theory of putting a hotter plug to remedy perceived exhaust (AKA fuel mixture) issues. I might be one to try a hotter plug for a "oil burner/smoker", to keep it from fouling so often.
