A known-good belt is a good place to start. Part # "jw1-g6241", or a aftermarket "high performance" belt. Do not waste money on an aftermarket "stock style" belt (thin & chincy).

I have seen videos on Plowman's Carts website about the newer Yamaha clutches not backshifting properly. Might check into that? It sounds like a clutch issue to me. A good thorough inspection might be in order. Take some pics and post them.

take off the front cover,, inspect the rollers real close,, if you see flat spots, that's the noise, they will run some time like that.
