I was also going to say that the clutch was probably beyond worn out. It probably had some drive-ability problems the last time it was driven. Ask the owner if it had problems getting going, like any "jerky" starts. Also look at the sheave faces and see if there is a groove or dish to the surface. Look at the pins (or what's left of them) on the weights for oblong or out of round shape. Look at all the moving parts for uneven wear. I'm betting you'll find it.

It's also possible that if the owner or previous owner ever had the clutch out that they may have dropped it. This can cause a crack that you can't see or even tell it's there....the BOOM. As you see it exploded.

If it is a replacement clutch (not original Yamaha) it could be inferior casting and assembly, etc.

Definitely NOT common. But I have heard of them exploding. So I voted yes on the poll.

Was the belt on it when this happened. No belt on and then the clutch slammed close at a high rpm?

no belt on, don't think it was reved up that high, but that was my first thought, however another close friend has worked on these Yamaha's for years and said he had run them a million times with out the belt! mayb he got lucky a million times!

In thirty plus years, I've never seen one explode like that! My guess, someone before you, tried to remove it with the wrong puller. Glad no one was seriously maimed from the shrapnel.

This is what I was thinking. Maybe someone dropped it, but the puller thing sounds logical. Tiny little cracks is what i was thinking.

Yes, but never at wide open throttle. Useually to isolate noise from tansaxle or engine.
