Cart won't go - Cable problem?
Got an older G2. Engine runs good, compression measures at 160. When I push on the gas pedal, the engine runs the same speed whether it is barely pushed or floored. The speed the engine runs is not enough to power the cart when on the ground. Raised, it will turn the wheels very slow. Clutches seem to be working fine. I do know that when it was working, the brake pedal would stick and after pressing the brake pedal I would have to put my foot under it to release it. It is released now for all this testing i'm doing. Is there some cable issue? The accelerator pedal must have a couple cables on it because just moving the throttle cable on the carb doesn't run the engine. As you can tell, I'm pretty new to golf carts so any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Re: Cart won't go - Cable problem?
To start with, I don't think the motor is running. I believe it is just turning over on the starter. Need to check for spark at the spark plug, then test fuel pump for pumping fuel.
As far as brake pedal, there is a spring wrapped around the bottom of the brake pedal arm that has broken!! |

Re: Cart won't go - Cable problem?
Get a new spring from a yamaha dealer and grease the inside of the bolt when you put the brake pedal back in. I did mine it works nice now, that spring wears out or breaks after 20yr. Pull up the mat behind the pedals and (remove key) wiggle the panel out of there. Sometimes it gets full of dirt and you can wash it out, but usually the brake spring there on the pedal is weak to cause that. They don't cost that much when I got mine few year ago.
The starter runs if the pedal is down, if you gas it and it does not speed up above idle then the engine is not running or your throttle cable is broken. The pedal cable goes to the governor on top of the trans, another short cable goes there to carb. The long one from the pedal breaks once in a while, so make sure when you push pedal down the carb does open. If so then its not running. Its not getting gas or spark usually, check those. Put a new ngk bprs2 plug in it, its recommended plug for newer yamaha carts and works better in older G2/9 carts. New comp for G2 is 180 or more, but should run at 160 (if your gauge is right and many are not). |

Make sure to jack the back end of the cart up before you start testing the cable, etc... And use safety stands. Be safe! You do not want that thing starting up and taking off while you have your hand in the engine compartment.

Mike Mac - good call. That thing was just turning off the starter. It wasn't getting gas. The filter was completely clogged. Took care of that and it runs great. Thanks everybody for all the advice. Now on to look for posts about installing that brake return spring.

Re: Cart won't go - Cable problem?
I'm going to guess your going to have problems getting the bolt out of that sleeve. Might have to cut the bolt on each side and lift the brake pedal arm straight up, out of the frame channel!!
I decided to get all new parts!! Good luck!! |

Re: Cart won't go - Cable problem?
You are right. This is a 1989 G2 and it had never been taken apart so it was really rusted up. I spent a good 2 hours getting it out of the cart, putting it in a vise and heating it up and beating on it. Finally got it out. I ordered all new bushings, collar, bolt, spring. Got plenty of anti-sieze to put it back together with.
Is the pic you show a kit with all that shown included? if so, where did you get it? thanks. |

Re: Cart won't go - Cable problem?
No, all seperate parts!! And, VERY good move on the "NEVER SEIZE"!!!
You won't be able to use the orange seals (to keep out dirt) unless you order the new arm. It's machined for them to fit!! I'd call Plowmans, or Cart Parts Plus. Is it you that somebody said you were close to Plowmans? Just as a side note, knowing Yamaha, I bet these parts and their design, was to be assembled dry, (like their king pin bushings), but I used the never seize anyway!! Just because I love that stuff!!... |
