Default Yamaha G1

I have a 1983 Yamaha G1 golf cart. Runs really slow. Happened before so I torched muffler. it worked for years and did it again. Torched it again. Lots of air going through when I blew air through with shop vac. What does the small hollow pipe coming from muffler do. It has a small wire in it and hooked to a hose. After I torched the muffler the fitting got warped so I cannot screw it back in and partially screwing it in makes cart run slow as in barely moving. I ran it without it being attached at all and it takes off like a jack rabbit and runs ok so far. It is noisier because of exhaust blowing through half inch hole. Plugging hole results in barely moving again. So do I really need that hooked up? Will it hurt anything without it? Do I need to clean the hose?

it sends a pulse to the oil pump determining how much oil should be put out of the pump... that being said it sounds like your muffler is restricted just enough when you have the hole plugged it cant flow enough air... i would try bbq the muffler not just torch it. i dont think the torch is even enough heat to get all the junk burned out

BBq on an open fire out of question. I live in the city. Can I cut the muffler in half, clean pipes and then weld it back together?

I just saw a post about same problem. Looks like he cut off end and later welded it back on. Neighbor has electric welder and will weld it if I cut it apart and clean it. He does not have cutting torch. Wish me luck.

I have done the BBQ on an actual gas BBQ grill
while does produce a bit of smoke and flames
nobody would call the local fire dept over it

adding a small bit of lighter fluid [not gas] can help

I think the torch while hot was not used long enough to heat the inside high
to burn out the oil sludge
it takes time to get the whole inside real hot

Heck buy a bag of charcoal and do it in your backyard on the ground I wouldn't suggest cutting it open unless you have a good welder and know what you're doing the metal is pretty thin and easy to burn through when welding

Others have cut the end and slid the guts out and posted pics here. You can do that. I would cut the thing with a plasma cutter or sawsall/bansaw or cutoff wheel. I would never use a torch it will make a mess out of it and hard to weld back together.

I had a guy wanting to sell one asked me to work on it, same issue. I stuck a big wire up the exhaust and knocked the junk out of the tailpipe and it ran fine. Not sure how long it worked as he sold it.

Okay, I cut the muffler open piece by piece. It had insulation around the canister that holes in it. I took one end off and torched the whole thing for an hour then cooled it with water to shake and handle it. Small exhaust pipe was still restricted a bit so I used a small sink snake and cleared it, torched again washed it and let it dry. Neighbor bought some metal Metal is actually quite thick and bent it to shape after putting pink insulation in between the holy canister and the outside covering and welded it together and painted it. Metal was 50.00 Donated labor charge to Ft McMurray. There were no baffles inside. Runs great
