Default 86 Marathon Help Question

I have a 86 marathon that seems to be jerking when starting off and does not really have that much power going up a hill/grade. I looked at the belt on the clutch and it "looks" really loose. My questions is what can be causing this? If this is a possible belt or clutch issue, what can I do to test them to know.
Thanks everyone for your help.

A long, worn belt will cause sluggish take off. Also look at the driven (not on the engine) clutch and see if the two sheaves are closed up to each other and the belt is up to the top when the cart is stopped.

1st thanks for your help. Now how can I tell if the belt is worn out and also if I go to a small belt will it give me more power?
What do you the sheaves, are you meaning the halves of the clutch?

Thanks

Measure the width of the belt, new ones are 1 3/16". Should be around 1 1/8"-1 3/16". If the belt is slipping, sometime turning it around will help. The faces where the belt rides up against in the clutch are called sheaves
