it's an air cooled engine, the fan on the flywheel will blow air through the cooling fins to keep it from overheating.

If you dont put the cooling fine back on, it's probably going to overheat. If you dont like the way they look, just wire brush and paint them so they look new again :)

I was thinking the opposite, because when I took everything off there was dirt and crude impacted around the engine, so I was thinking it would be way cooler (less hot) than with the shrouds on. But I can see how the shrouds would keep the air moving too.

I will probably reinstall them.
