Carry all VI governor movement
I am in the process of trying to resurrect a 1994 Carry All VI CCW FE350. I can only get the engine to start and run by manually operating and choking the carb. In tracing back from the carb to the governor pivot shaft I find that there is only 10-15 degrees of travel in the shaft coming out if the top of the transmission. I reset the governor travel as posted in this forum. What I am finding is that the governor doesn't relax enough for the butterfly (throttle plate) to close and choke the engine enough to start or run at low speeds. How much travel should there be in the governor rod? Or is there something that is keeping the shaft from moving? Thanks for all input

Re: Carry all VI governor movement
The governor arm only moves about an inch total.
If the throttle plate is not closing all the way first make sure the return spring is installed correctly. It should go from the throttle arm to the bracket forward of the carb. If it's missing you need one. Second is to make sure the governor cable (from gov arm to carb) is loose. The governor arm should never be pulling against the cable with the pedal in the fully up position. Also disconnect the cable at both ends and make sure the cable slides VERY FREELY in the cable sheath. There should be little to no resistance to move the cable. If there is any drag or noticeable rough feel or the cable catches anywhere it needs to be replaced. I recommend an original cable from Club car for the best quality. Some aftermarket cables are not loose enough and will cause the throttle to stick which will cause a surging condition while driving. Third is the throttle cable adjustment from the throttle box to the governor arm. This adjusts when the governor arm starts to pull the throttle cable. This should be initially adjusted to roughly in the center of the threaded section at the throttle box end of the cable. Adjust in or out to change when the governor arm starts to pull the governor cable. There should be about 1" of pedal travel between when the throttle switches click until the throttle starts to open. Governor arm adjustment can be tricky to get right, and a small change will make a big difference. I don't remember off hand how to adjust the governor arm back to the initial setting on the older carts. I think it's either to turn the rod all the way clockwise, or all the way counter clockwise with the Go pedal all the way down. Then make adjustments to the final position based on speed while driving. If it's hitting the RPM limiter and cutting out at speed then it needs to be backed off. It's tricky to get it perfect, and a small change makes a big difference. Patience goes a long way here because it will take several attempts to get it set right. |
