Battery Charger Hot?
I bought a used Yamaha 2014 cart today. Think it has original batteries and it still seems to somehow be working. I was less than 1/2 battery power on the gauge, so I put it on the charger. I came back 1/2 hour later and gauge said full charge. The charger was making a sound, didn't pay much attention and I unplugged it. When I touched the charger, it was hot.
I paid a price assuming batteries needed to be replaced so I don't have buyers remorse. I'm concerned though. Should the charger get hot? Do they make a little noise? Thanks. |

Re: Battery Charger Hot?
I replaced the batteries, they were old. Hooked charger up and bottom plate still gets hot. Will not take your skin off but hot. The top of the unit is not hot. The connector where you plug charger to the cart is warm also.

Re: Battery Charger Hot?
Those do run fairly hot, that's why they have a fan. Is your fan working?

Re: Battery Charger Hot?
Yes the fan is working. I checked the battery cable under the seat, they are not warm so assuming its ok.
cgtech, thank you for the info! |

Re: Battery Charger Hot?
I just put a voltmeter on it, 52 vt (disconnected charger). I'm assuming its fully charged. If I was to check with a volt meter, if volts go below X then I know it needs a charge. What is X?

Re: Battery Charger Hot?
48.5v is the 50% SOC (state of charge), and keeping it above that maximizes battery life. Below 46.6v, battery damage is happening at a much accelerated rate.
Always charge after every use. Lead acid batteries dont have the "memory effect", so dont fall for that one. Lead batteries live longest the higher their average state of charge is kept over their lifespan. Also, 50.9 is 100% SOC, but that's after waiting 12 hours before measuring them. |
