General transmission question

I have a 1985 EZ-GO 2-cycle golf cart. Is the transmission unitraction? Also thre is a plug on the transmission. ( to fill with fluid i would suppose). How much fluid should be in that case? What kind of transmission fluid should I use if needed?

Also an independent question... How do you know if it's time to replace the motor mounts?

If you are referring to the rear axel, it’s a conventional automotive type, semi floating design. Not positive traction. The lubricant should be at the bottom level of the filler hole. The manual calls for a Chevron R P M Delo Multi-Service 200-30. I saw a really good post (with pictures) on changing the differential oil on the site somewhere.

The transmission consists of a belt, and two centrifugal pulleys.

As far a motor mounts go….when they are broken I would guess.

Watch for cracking around the base of the motor. The two cycles vibrate so much that they will develop stress cracks in that area and start clattering. They are hard to spot but you can use a pry bar and a buddy to gently pry around on the engine while visualizing that area. if you see any, you could lay in some round stock which is what I did on my 89 and really quieted down the whole shebang.
