Default G8 how to start

My G8 I bought a couple weeks ago finally got it started. It appears to have a new carb and fuel pump on it but it is one son of a gun to get started. Now do you start these in neutral or in gear? And does anyone have an idea why it starts so hard, I have to give it a shot of starting fluid. No I didn't check the compression yet . But it has one of the hotest sparks I have ver seen.

Roc, is the choke functioning? I start mine in neutral with the choke pulled for about 1 second, and it lights right off. Then I run it slowly for 15 to 30 seconds.

Check to make sure it is not sucking air (lean) from the air box or from a cracked plastic manifold spacer between the carb. and the head. Idle mixture screw, one and a half turns out, to start.
Maintenance my friend, I was where you are now!

I pulled the fuel lne off the carb and it sure doesn't appear to pumping fuel very good. One vacum line goes down underneath the engine and has a T in it with it going to the head. Are these routed right. It does pop back thru the carb alot while trying to start,I''l check the valves today

i live in a cold climate (new Hampshire). my g9 is slow to start. I do not have nuetral, only forward and reverse. I pull the choke and pump the gas pedal. It will go after a few. It's cold where you are. could there be water in the fuel filter thats maybe starting to cube?

No the tank was empty before I put fresh gas, it could be just the cold. My 88 ezgo startes right up in this weather. Just for info tho. There is no accerator pump on these engines so pumping the gas pedal is just excerise for your foot.
