Re: rehabing my axle
Its' not a skid-plate from aluminum. You want a steel-brace from side to side, that actually rests on the gear-case,so that when it tries to flex,it uses the gear-case as a bridge, increasing strength. You can build a bolt-on that goes onto your axle u-bolts,or build a angle-bracket that bolts to the u-bolt plate, then use a truss-bar that has threaded-ends,and you can draw them up,and pre-load the axle, increasing strength.I had one like that on a Lifted truck, and it made an instant difference,I noticed the handling improvement the first time I drove it.Hope this helps.

Pachanga, since you mention aluminum, I presume you are talking to me. I know what a truss is, in cars and in buildings. If you look at the link I posted you'll find we are on the same page.

Re: rehabing my axle
Chloe,I didn't see the link before(Nice Pics).Did you notice that half of the trusses posted weren't doing squat for overall strength?I love it when people spend all that time and money to gain weight, and not benefit any strength(they only Bridged the Center-Section).

Re: rehabing my axle
Thanks for the help guys. I'll look into trussing it while I have it out. I know a couple good aluminum welders.

Re: rehabing my axle
The tubes may be steel but I am pretty sure about the punkin. Either way, pick the style you like, and take Pachanga's comments to heart. If it isn't supporting the tubes as well as the punkin, it isn't doing it's job.
Look at how your axle broke then look at some of the full length trusses. You should readily see the value of doing it right. |
