If you have 3 12v batteries sitting around you can use those to see if it runs, then you will know what to do next

I agree, see if it runs, going to 48v is expensive in a series cart, (or any cart for that matter) so it really comes down to what you want to do. When I bought my cart I wanted something to tool around on and have fun, as I drove it more I wanted more speed so I've decided I am going to go to 48v but when I'm done it will be somewhere around $2200 all together, plus the $1000 I paid for the cart. Since you got yours on the cheap it won't be as bad.

However if everything works you could be into a running cart for $1200ish depending on the price of batteries in your area and a charger if needed

The pic you have posted is of the battery rack/tray. It is common to see rust there. Yours does not appear to be too badly damaged. Give the bottom flats a rap with a hammer. If they are solid, wire brush it clean, (or use POR). Once properly cleaned, paint it with a good rust inhibitor paint and you are ready to go. If the hammer strike breaks, cracks or otherwise shows weakness in the metal, remove it and replace the rack. A new one can be had for about $175.00 or less.

Go here http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Batter..._Upgrades.html get the complete 13 high current cables even if you hook up 3 12v you can just leave3 wires off to test it.

The only reason I say that is to see if it is working. If it doesn't work and you need to replace things like controller and F&R switch at that point I would say go for the 48v conversion because upgrading at that point won't be much more.

It only takes a single 12 volt battery to test the motor.

There are several posts on how to connect a motor for testing.

Here's a good one:

Here's a couple pics of mine it's a work in progress.
used tires, Alltrax controller, heavy duty solenoid, converter, led voltmeter, radio, batteries, cables.
It's still 36 volt but it's ready to go 48volts just need batteries and a charger.
I've spent about $1500 on it so far, not counting my labor.
That might give you an idea on what it takes.
Oh the cart was free and so was the other 96 TXT
