Default Ezgo 22337 belt lenght

I have a 1989 ezgo gas cart. I pulled the drive belt and it looks like it needs replaced. It is maked Dayco 22337 G1. A new belt is 41" o/d. I took my old belt and marked the side of it with a pencil and placed it on the floor marking the floor at belt mark. Then I rolled the belt untill the mark came to the floor again and marked the spot giving a true o/d lenght. It came out to be 39 7/8.
I would think the belt would get streched with age. Do they srink with age?
Thanks for any help in advance

Hello Ironman, It is quite a common practice to fit a shorter belt as this effectively changes the gear ratio downwards giving better acceleration and hill climbing. Normally the maximum is 1 inch shorter but as your belt is 1 1/8th shorter, maybe this happened in your case.

Dayco says that is 41x1-3/16. the width is the determining wear factor. If it has lost more than 1/8th of an inch in width it should be replaced according to the service manual.

Yes, I am sure the belt needs replaced. It is only 1 1/16" wide. What I do not understand is that the o/d on the old belt marked Dayco 22337 g-1 is only 39 7/8 when I measued it. It came off easy by hand. Did I measure it the right way? { As stated above} And is there a way to adjust the belt if it is to lose.
Thanks for the super fast responce....This is a great site and I have learned alot just by reading

Your measurement was off by 1/328 th of the total sum. Hardly anything to be concerned with. I don't know which belt is best. I use OEM but Dayco makes good belts too.

I warpped a sting around the belt and marked the sting at the same place. Measured string between marks and it was was 41". Apparently the way I measured in by rolling it on the floor gave a false reading {Not sure why} I would like to apologize to Dave and Scottyb for any confusion I have made.
Thanks, Ed
