I saw a 82 g-1 the other day that had the same button and the owner for that cart said that he was not sure but the person that sold it to him told him that it was a turbo typ button that when pushed gave you a little extra push. I tried to track the wires , one form the number 6 neg another number one pos in and out of the switch , when pushed it clicks the solenoid.

my first thought was that it was the latch that unhooked the body that lifts up.

IDK. Makes no sense, you have a constant duty solenoid anyway.
At least I would think so... |

the button on mine is disconnected and has a speed control, the older 82 g-1 does not . I did not have much time to track the wires down completely.

Not knowing crap about Yamahas, and it is a resistor cart, I would venture a sophisticated wild azz guess that it clicked in another solenoid to reach full speed.
Or, a reverse solenoid? |
