Default yamaha 48 volt

my neighbor just came back for the winter. His yamaha 48 volt golf cart batteries were down to 5.4 volts. We were able to get the charger to start charging with the help of another cart. (run tow switch turned off) The charger is charging for about 10 seconds then stops for about 15 seconds then starts again for 10 seconds. after over night the batteries are up to 6.9 volts. The question is why is the charger not staying on?

That sounds like you have (6) 8 volt batteries. You may want to take each one out and charge it separately on a manual battery charger for 6v which should put out almost 8v. Your golf cart charger probably doesn't see enough voltage to stay on. 6.9x6=41.4 volts which is still really dead

No need to remove the batteries to charge individually. 6-8v or 4-12v? The charger needs to see a minimum voltage to operate...

Most automatic chargers, like Yamaha MAC and DPI need at least 44+ volts to sense they are plugged into something. Force charge the battery st to over 44+ volts, plug in the charger, it will charge for a while and go abnormal. Useually, unplug and replug in the charger and it will stay on charging over night to fully charged.
