If you have 1 battery or a corroded cable that is dropping out during a heavy load (driving) this will most definitely cause your motor brake to intermittently lock up. I've had numerous bad batteries that do not show themselves unless i have the bank on a discharge machine

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess the 2.9v battery that exploded was the source of the problem.
