Starter generator purchase
I was wanting to know why the large difference in price on starter generators? Is there a reliability issue between $150 s/g and $300 s/g? Does anybody have experience using cheaper s/g’s?

Re: Starter generator purchase
The cheap starters are well cheap......
I went that route after asking your same question around October, last week the cheap starter burn up on me, so I'm going to pull it off and send it in for warranty. It only lasted 6 months, but that was six months over the winter. I bet I haven't drove in it 20 times during that 6 months. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk |

Re: Starter generator purchase
Here is my post, after all the talk about buying factory starter I ended up buying a eBay starter.
Best of luck to you https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink?url...7&share_type=t Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk |

Re: Starter generator purchase
A set of new brushes is $40 from club car. New bearings are around $30-40 for the pair depending where you get them.
Unless it has some major failure or the windings or physical damage to the armature, Rebuild yours and avoid the headache of a cheap starter. I talked to my local cart guy recently about this he showed me pictures of three different units all branded as “Dynamo”. They are so cheap the commutator bars on the armature were paper thin strips of copper and they would wear out in just a few weeks of use. To add to that, the commutator structure was made of a fiber material, so when the bars wore through the brushes would snag the material and shred it. It fills the case with something that looks like fiberglass. This happens while you’re driving and the next time you stop, it doesn’t start again. |

Re: Starter generator purchase
I'll add that the brush contact area of the new OEM Bi-Rotational starter generators is about 3 times larger than the aftermarket starters or even the old Mando or Hitachi OEM units. The new factory ones are very impressive if you tear into one and look at it.

Re: Starter generator purchase
Yep. Could be Asbestos for all we know. I’ll stick with rebuilding.
I’ve always thought the Mando units were pretty stout. Kinda interested to see what the new ones are all about now. |
