G16E - Need advice on hill climbing upgrades
Howdy all....
I have been following this forum for a while, and a few years ago bought a G16E - batteries are decent, but is has a 5 inch Jake's lift kit on it and 25 inch tall tires. Recently the controller has been cutting off due to over heating, so I am ready for some repairs/upgrades... I live on some fairly decent size hills, and with the motor being stock, and 25 inch tires.... well I have to get out so the cart can make it to the top of the hills with my wife. ( I bought the cart the way it is with lift and tires - I can reduce the tire size, but the cart is mostly all original) I can DIY the work, looking for ideas - maybe an upgrade to 48V. So I have a little farm and the cart gets used for carrying feed and water to the critters. Carries a little firewood to the camp site plus the kids, and runs back and forth to change targets... normal stuff I would think. Normal load is my wife (weight will not be mentioned) My self at 220lbs, 50 - 100lbs of feed, plus 10gal of water. I don't need speed - just grunt to get to the top of the hills without me getting out and walking or pushing the cart to help it out. Suggestions will be welcomed, please point to other threads as well. Thanks |

Re: G16E - Need advice on hill climbing upgrades
I had an ez go 36v cart cart a couple years ago. It was underpowered for the campground. We had some big hills and I routinely had 4 or 5 people on it. Scotty B hooked me up with an alltrax 48500 controller and new solenoid and I did the 48v conversion. It was a beast!

Yes, 48 volts is what every old 36v series cart needs

Re: G16E - Need advice on hill climbing upgrades
Alrighty then, if 48V is the way to go....
I have an old club car 48v axle and motor sitting on a shelf in my shop, might have the controller as well - need to look. My friend had an old club car with a cracked frame, so we did a frame swap, and I got all the spare parts from the doner cart. Need to see if I can hybrid my Yamaha.... of course the motor may be toast - need to test it. SO... can I use a set of jumper cables from the 36v that I currently have to see if the 48v motor will at least turn? Or will that toast my 36v controller? I would thing a less than one minute pull from the 48v motor should not do any damage.... but I am as rookie as they come when it comes to carts. |

Just upgrade your pack and necessary components to 48v and run the same motor.

Re: G16E - Need advice on hill climbing upgrades
The G16 should be a 19 spline motor same as the Ezgos so lots of big motors available.
The Club Car is a 10 spline, lots of good motors available for that one too. No need to change the G16 rear unless you have shock interference with a long stack motor. But even then a shock mount rework is easier. |

Scottyb
Thanks for the email... First thing - I need to reduce the tire height.... My cart NEVER sees tarmac/concrete - it lives in the dirt and grass... Since I will change tires, need to get down to at least 22 inches... Anyone have recommendations for tires that do really well in wet grass, and lots of hills, aggressive tread is fine... Thanks all... plan is tires, then 48V upgrade - my cart is ALL original and just worn out. What do you expect for $800 bucks, the PO just ran the poo out of it - at least the batteries are from 2016.... |
