Newbie looking at getting first cart

Hoping someone may be able to tell me any problems to look for in a 96 Yamaha G16A, There are no mods done to it, used to be a golf course cart before family bought it 5 years ago. Wondering if this is a good one to get for $1400?

That seems like a good deal , most running carts in my area usually go for $1500 and up . good luck

The biggest thing to look at (or listen to) are engine noise's/smoking and the transaxle "growling" or a vibration "in the seat of your pants" when driving. Those transaxle parts are expensive. Good luck

It started right up, engine was quite, no smoke and didn't feel any vibrations

Price is reasonable. Tires still good? Brand new ones (stock 18-inch on 8" rim) would cost you anywhere from US$ 25-35 each so that would be like 120 dollars plus mounting cost. Battery good? Air and fuel filter must be changed unless the owner tells you that these were newly replaced. Check engine oil if it looks like new, not dark, murky and dirty (sign of poor maintenance). Brakes okay?

Follow Smallblock's lead, but I think the G16 is the best model Yamaha made, to mod and hotrod!

Maybe see if you can drive it awhile and get a feel for it. Check oil level in motor, look for leaks in general etc. Look for holes warn in clutch sheaves.

Just drive it awhile and see how it reacts!

I bought a 97 last summer and I knew absolutely nothing about golf cars. Here's what I had to do because I didn't check close enough. My primary clutch had large flats worn into them & I had to replace those. ($60 just for the rollers, I did the work myself) If possible, this is fairly easy to check by removing the clutch cover. After using the cart for a while, I decided to change differential oil by removing the cover. Seemed strange that it was bone dry. Replaced the cover with sealer and proceeded to refill it. Oil ran out almost as fast as I was putting it in. Seems like users (golfers) found a few rocks with the differential (really low clearance here on an unlifted, regular tire cart) and punched a couple cracks into the diff. bottom. (Praying that J-B weld is good stuff) !!!!checking that the differential has oil would be a good idea. Also look at the bottom of the diff. for any evidence of damage. Also, I never noticed that the factory installed skid plate at the rear was missing (I didn't know it even had one). I'd take a look for that also. These are some of the actual mistakes I made when selecting my cart. (I had my choice of ten carts, and I picked this one) !!!! Hope this helps and good luck - the price sounds good if all is well.
