G9 smells rich and lacks power

Still trying to line out my G9. I recently bypassed the governor, replaced the throttle cable, and adjusted the stop/start switch. It now runs great at low speeds but it smells rich. I'm not sure how fast it should run with governor bypassed but it seems slow and lacking power. Sounds like it is not revving up as high as it should. I have adjusted the cable so that the carb opens and closes all the way. I adjusted the mixture screw per another thread to 1.5 turns out. I cleaned the air filter out and put some bungie cords on the box to make sure it was sealed good. I had my wife ease it around and could not see any smoke. The spark plug looked to be in good shape. What am I missing?

This is usually the carb throttle not opening up all the way if the engine doesn't seem to be reving up much. Have to tried jacking up the cart and running it in neutral to see what the carb throttle is doing?

You might take a look at the clutches and make sure they opening and closing all the way. Might have a clutch that is stuck or weak (front or back). Also could be a worn or stretched belt but it should still rev high in this case.

Sprid may have it there, a weak clutch will try
to load the engine , holding the rpms down and
forcing you step down harder and cause it to run rich.

I'm pretty sure the carb is opening all the way. The flat piece of metal that the cable hooks to contacts the throttle stop screw when closed and rotates as far as possible when open. I don't know about the clutch though. I'm not real sure what to check on the them. I have a new belt that goes to the starter so that would give me a good excuse to work on them if need be.

Usually, a rich mixture is caused by one or more of the following:

High fuel pump pressure. (Doubtful with these fuel pumps)
Float level set too high.
Needle valve not seating properly.
Restriction in the airflow. (Dirty air filter, air intake blocked, choke not fully open)

Remove the airbox and see what happens...

Also, check the engine oil and airbox for any evidence of gasoline.

I'm going to take a look at the clutches and take the elbow off the carb from the air box. Someone was saying you can cover the inlet on the carb with a piece of clean t shirt material to test it.

Also just a thought.... A turn and a half on the carb adjustment is just a starting point. I know I put mine on jack stands with it in gear so the motor was under load and fine tuned it

Well I ran it with out the air box hooked up and it seemed slightly better but still far from good. So I took the carb apart and cleaned it. Put it all back together and adjusted it. Still not much better so I tried to take the cover off the clutch to check it out and that didn't work too well. The screws are stuck in there pretty good. I guess I'll try heating them tomorrow. Is it normal for that cover to be pretty warm to the touch after a couple of minutes of riding?

Hey, Take_em, any luck with the cart? How did the clutch look? Yes, they will get warm, guite a bit of friction in there!
