Trailer Hitch on my Cart
I welded a Reese hitch on the back of my cart. It was designed to be bolted to a truck's bumper. But just a little tongue weight causes the bumper to sag. Any ideas on how to brace the bumper?

Re: Trailer Hitch on my Cart
I just want to be able to hook a trailer up to it so my son can haul the John Deere garden tractor on it. In Stronghurst Illinois it is legal to drive the cart as long as you license it in the village. So I went one step farther and put the hitch and trailer lights socket on it. With no complaints from the village.

Night, Have you considered welding a piece of angle in the back frame piece? Cut it to the full width and tak the sides to the frame and the back.
Just a thought. |

Re: Trailer Hitch on my Cart
My main concern is that too much tongue weight from a bounce or what ever. That will push on the brace and then the bend the frame it is wielded to. I was wondering about putting two shock absorbers on either side.
My cart is more of a work horse. And doing errands around the village. I put the lift kit on it so snow would not be any problem. Of course it doesn't hurt that it is fun to drive. ;) Mark |

Re: Trailer Hitch on my Cart
A 6 x 12 tilt bed trailer. Have you ever driven a 1300 pound garden tractor on one? Once the bed levels, then you have to get off. But if you don't go far enough then the bed will tilt as soon as you get off. Not to mention, if you don't put some weight on the tongue. Hit a bump and the back of your cart will jump up. :) But even fifty pounds on the bumper bends the frame.
How do they brace the frame for a rear seat? Mark |

Re: Trailer Hitch on my Cart
Mark happy to see you started a post Ok here's the deal. Weld a1x1 U shaped frame the same inside measurement of the bag well as you will see it's close to the upper frame. I think on mine I left about 12"on the verticals then cut them to size to fit tight to the bag well. Then I used 1 3/4" .095 square tube fro the hitch tube like a Reese and 1 1/2' for the receiver and
mounted a ball and plate for lawn tractor trailer. Rock solid. If you need pics PM me with email add I don't know how to post pics but maybe you can after you receive them K. LOU |

Under the "submit Reply" button is a blue bar that goes all the way across the screen. Under that blue bar is a button that says "Manage Attachments" Clicking on that will open a box that lets you upload pictures.
Pictures are greate if you would could please post them. Even with pictures and detailed instructions I have a hard times getting it on to the cart :) Mark |

Re: Trailer Hitch on my Cart
Night.
Considering how much weight you carry, it sounds like you could use "helper springs" like you put on a truck for towing. Recently i bought new 4 leaf heavy duty springs for my 98 txt. It turns out the 4th leaf was too much so i took them off after the first day or so. If you were to add these leafs to your leaf spring pack, it would help. If your interested in these for the price of postage and a bit more for my time, send me a pm. These are the bottom leaf spring off each rear spring. I use dual rear shocks and a three leaf spring setup for my towing needs and they work great. |
