Hit the gas, and it doesn't go right away?
1989 Marathon gas cart. My cart runs great, accelerates great, and has good power. My issue is when I hit the gas it doesn't want to go right away. It won't even turn over for a few seconds? When it does finally kick in, she runs great! Any suggestions, or is this how they are? Thanks

I'd check the brushes on the starter/gen. Check your solinoid too.

How do I go about changing the brushes? Does the starter/gen. have to come out?

Yes, you have to remove it.

Re: Hit the gas, and it doesn't go right away?
I think that I would look a few simpler solutions before diving into the starter.
First trace the negative battery cable to the common ground point and then take it apart. Clean the chassis down to bare metal and clean any corrosion from the cable lugs. Make sure that there is a ground braid to the engine block and reassemble. Did this cure your problem? If not read on. Jack up the rear end (or remove the drive belt) so it doesn't run away with you. With the seat removed locate the starter solenoid and with the key on, depress the accelerator with your hand. You should hear a small click of the throttle microswitch as well as a bigger click as the solenoid fires. If you have a meter you can connect between the negative of the battery and the the large terminal of the solenoid that is not connected to the positive of the battery. It should be zero volts until you press the throttle when it should be 12 volts. What do you see or hear? If things are still not right you can short across the two big terminals and the engine should crank. Let us know what happens. Dave |

I'll do it, and report back. Thanks for the detailed help.
