Default Need help, rebuilt 3 starters and all start slow now...

Have changed the brushes in 3 different starters and each of them has struggled to turn the compression stroke afterwards. Before they all had no problem turning it over (just needed new brushes).

I used 2 different brands of brushes and emery cloth on the contact surfaces.

The last one I did really struggled and even produced some smoke while struggling to start. I also put a new battery in that one.

Is there a break-in period for new brushes? Maybe I am tightening the starter belts too tight? I use a bar over the exhaust to hold pressure while tightening the 1/2" nut - I have done this to tighten slipping belts hundreds of time with no problem like this.

Any suggestions?

thanks in advance

There was just a post on here not to long ago about having issues starting if the belt was too tight. Try backing the tension down just a touch and see if it makes a difference.
