Default EZGO workhorse batteries reading negative voltage

My EZGO Workhorse (2003, 36V) has worked perfectly for a long time until it quit last Friday. I tested the batteries in succession and got 6.7Vdc, then 13.4, then 21. As soon as I hit the next battery my votage read -21Vdc (that's negatave 21). I have no idea what could have happened. As far as the wiring goes for description sake; the first three batteries are in direct succession then they go to the circuit board then back through the other three batteries. At first glance I cannot see any bad wires or anything disconnected. The charging receptacle which has for a few weeks now been broken (it still charges but it seperated from the cart so now I have to raise the seat in order to access the charging receptacle). I would greatly appreciate any hints as to what the problem might be.
P.S. All batteries are full of water and when I connected the charger last, it sounded like the water in all of the batteries was boiling.

Did you have the red test lesd on the positive ond the black on the negative. My meter will read negative if the test leads are backwards. I don't think a battery can read negative volts but I've been wrong before.

The problem is some of your battery connectors or cable are not in good conditions. Check all batteries' connectors and cable. beware of sulfate corrosion too.
