Default battery getting hot

I have 1 battery getting hot. I pulled the caps to check the water and it was low. It took half a gallon of distilled water to fill up. would the water being low cause the studs to heat up or do I have another problem. All 6v batteries.

yep ... If the electrolyte level drops below the tops of the plates, irreparable damage may occur

This right here tells there is likely something wrong with that battery or there is something else wrong (not likely) as batteries that are less than a year old should not be going through that much if any water at all.... While I'd be most suspect of the battery I'd be mindful of the charger and/or if that battery is being un-equally tapped power wise. My batteries are near 2 years old and have needed no water at all...

I agree that there is something wrong with that battery if it uses water much faster than the others. Less than a year old batteries usually don't consume much water. You should still check them often. Exposed plates damage the battery - and can overheat it.

Lose connections or dirty terminals will cause it to over heat as well.

Yeah I noticed it has gotten loose. I tighten it up and will drive it this evening to see if it gets hot. Only get hot after driving, not while charging.
