Default G2 Airbox Question

This is my recent project and from what I understand, these motors can act funky when the air box isn't sealed right. Well I can only give it gas half way without it stalling out. If I choke it, it runs perfect. I've had the carb off and every jet and passage is clear as can be. The mixture screw is adjusted up to specs also. Well, the top of the airbox has been zip tied on in only 2 spots and a piece is broken off the side. I was also wondering if there is supposed to be a rubber gasket that seals the top of the airbox to the bottom? If so, it doesn't have one. I'm just wondering if it's pulling air and leaning the motor out? As usual, I appreciate any and all help from the pro's. I have also posted a pic of the broken piece. Thanks

Yes, that piece needs to be replaced (or leave that piece off and jet up to make it run).I know this cause I have modifyed mine, jetted up a small amount(read the plug) and it runs good.
Yes, there is a gasket in the top,(needs to be there), also check for cracks in the plastic spacer between the carb. and head.
I would get the rubber straps that go on the filter housing also (can't beat stock parts just my opinion).
Good luck, keep us posted, Mike

Mike, you're the Man! Thanks for your help. Do you know where the best place to get bigger jets and those air box parts? Thanks again.

Your local Yamaha dealer, or site sponsers, for parts. As for jetting, search "jetting" threads, there is alot of info. on this. I would resize the jet, with a set of torch tip cleaners (Sears $4.). Fix all known problems first. Do basic tune-up, clean every thing up so you can familurize yourself with it's parts, and maybe even silcone that snorcle back on to the housing. Try to make it run first, it will be much easier to jet with a running car than with a car barely running. Read this site, (all posts on Yamaha) you will learn tons from the "old timers"! All your problems are answered in old posts
Jets are expensive, $20. ea. so learn how to do it right the first time.

It just so happens that I had a 130 main jet sitting around from one of my motorcycles. I put that in and presto! The blue bomber is up and moving fantastic! I'm hoping the 130 jet is going to be good enough for now. Thanks a million.

My silencer is also pretty messed up. I tried without it, and it seems to run fine, although a little louder. Any risks to running without it?

I also had our generator rebuilt. But It seems like it still struggles with that first rotation of the engine. It does it, but really slows when it gets to the compression stroke. Is this normal? The cables do get warm as well when cranking. Wonder if sizing up the cable would be a good move?

Bigger wire is never a good idea check all connections the stock wires are plenty heavy heat is usually indication of a bad connection

That is my thought. Doesn't mean there isn't a bad connection. Maybe the relay?
