Charging System Troubleshooting

I was pretty sure there was a problem with my charger and then I read the entire thread and don't know if I'm thinking right or not.

My charger starts and charges normally down to about 5 amps. Then it sits there forever, seemingly. Blaming the charger I borrowed the neighbors newer design (Precedent) charger and it topped off the charge and shut off as expected. I've never checked the voltage after that, but based on previous posts it is apparently reaching adequate pack voltage with the borrowed charger. With my charger all batteries have a charged reading of 8.3 to 8.5 volts one hour after unplugging the charger.

Bottom line, I'm somewhat confused as to doing something about the charger or if the batteries are just getting old and will need replaced when we return to FL this fall.

If a different charger turned OFF by itself (meaning under the OBC control), the issue is with the charger itself.

You need to replace the charger relay as the contacts are likely not releasing.

Ok, thanks. Does that mean in this case I can overlook the 58.3 volt reading mentioned in Post #36?

Does your charger cycle when you plug it in? It should turn on within 2-10 seconds of plug insertion, run for a few seconds, and cycle off and back on. I just picked up a 2006 club car "AQ" i replaced batteries with new,cart works fine except it won't charge. iv'e followed the instructions given here,my relay wasn't clicking so i replaced it and it still doesnt click.at no time does the charger turn on and show charging.ive checked continuity from batt cables to inside charger and that is good.so what next is the question.any ideas?fuses have been checked and rechecked.i tried the jumper wire from fuse on plug to main negative cable and nothing.Thanks

Did you check the voltage at the two small terminals on the relay? Which model charger do you have?

Yes,I get battery voltage at the 2 terminals.Power drive 2 charger. I ordered a dpi charger and will by pass obc when it gets here,should solve my problem.

I just picked up a 1995 clubcar 48v golf cart. no tow run switch not sure what kind it is. i put a new set of batteries. cart runs fine. the charger is dated 1995 and its a power drive dated 4/95 model is 17930-11. when i plug charger in after 10 seconds i hear the relay click inside charger and nothing else happens. amp meter never moves. if i unplug the charger i hear it click again. i test both fuses at the receptacle side and both test good. the battery - is going threw the hole in the obc. I tried a jumper from the negative battery to the obc side of the fuse but nothing different happens. i have 50.4v across all batteries if i test volts from the top fuse black wire to the main positive lead it only show 34volts there. any help trouble shooting would be greatly appreciated.

This usually is a sign that the charger isn't getting any power. Check the wall outlet to make sure it's plugged into a good outlet. If so, check the AC power going into, and coming out of the circuit breaker of the charger, and then further into the circuit where it goes into the relay and comes out of it.
