Question G2 loss of power after clutch install

I am not sure if there has ever been a thread or not about this particular issue, if so I didn't see one just looking quick.

I have a 1989 Yamaha G2. It started losing power recently, and eventually got to where it would not even hardly pull itself. I assumed the primary clutch was going bad, but I wanted to try a new belt first just to see what happened. The new belt seemed to work for a few days, but then back to the same original problem. I ordered a new primary and we installed it and it did not fix the issue. We took apart the secondary and it was falling apart, definitely the cause of the issue. After installing the new secondary, I took the cart for a test drive. It shutters on take off, and while it will pull itself ok now it has lost power and speed compared to what it would do before the new clutches were installed.

My question is does anyone have any idea what the issue could be? Could running the bad secondary clutch with the new belt for just a few days ruin the new belt and causing it to slip, or maybe the problem lies elsewhere? Looking for any advice or ideas. Thanks.

Pics would help on this one.

Also, what clutches did you use?

OEM equivalent clutches purchased from an aftermarket supplier. The secondary does have the heavier duty replacement spring.

Also, we torqued the nut to 44 ft. lbs on the secondary, I was told that was the OEM torque spec for the G2.

I would ditch the HD spring and use the factory spring, see what that does. 5he aftermarket HD springs, especially the red one, are terrible and often lead to clutch damage.

Yeah it is the red spring that I put on it. So you don't think the new belt could have been ruined from just a few rides with the damaged secondary ?

No way to tell except to physically inspect the belt for damage or wear.

I have done some more research about the red HD spring. What you said makes sense. I think I am going to put the OEM spring back on and see what happens. The belt appears to be ok.

When you installed secondary. Did you give 1 pump of grease?
Also did you inspect the output shaft for damage? My clutch tore up the secondary shaft, which cost me a lot of $$ i didnt have.

Yes one pump of grease and the shaft looked fairly decent.
