Default Broken Steering Column - How?

So a friend of the family wrote me yesterday saying he had an old EZ Go (picture was a Marathon for sure) that had bad batteries and a broken steering column. I am waiting for a replay back for my "where is it broken at?" question. My question you all, the gcart is stock and looks like it still has golf course number stickers on it. How would someone brake a column on a stock 36v cart? Suped up, off orading carts i can see - but stock?

If driver's seat does not have a centrally located dark spot on it, Non-voluntary UFO abduction is a likely cause.

My 2014 EZGO RXV's steering column just snapped clean in two inside the steering assembly a couple of inches above the lower
bearings. It kinda looks like it was cut with a pipe cutter. We hit a rock going very slow which torqued the wheels. This could have caused serious injury if we had been going fast and lost control. The steering wheel just spins freely. Has anyone else had this happen?
