2000 Custom Club Car Questions

Hello everyone, So I have not changed anything yet. Over the weekend I bought another club car 98 ser # A9852-720678. This cart has stock wheels, no lift kit and no back seat. The cart runs much faster than my jaguar golf cart. The reason I bought it was I was thinking I could change the motor and put it in my jaguar cart. The previous owner says the 98 club car has a high speed transmission in it. and the motor specs say it is a 3.5hp motor. The specs on my jaguar cart says 3.1hp. Can someone tell me more about the high-speed transmission and if I should change it out. Both carts have stock controller and solenoid so I am wondering if I change the motor and transmission will it help. Thanks

If your cart is slowing down that much going uphill I would bet you will need a new set of batteries. If you have a volt meter put one lead on the main positive going to the controller and the other on the main negative going to the back of the cart through that little hole (OBC). With the meter on volts hold the brake and push on the gas about halfway and see what your voltage drops to. This is better done safely with the rear end jacked up so the cart cant lunge forward if the brakes slip. But I will bet your batteries are bad under load. With a new set you should see speeds of about 16-18mph with those wheels/tires.
There are a couple trans that club car has used for that year. One is a kawasaki, and 2 different Graziano gear boxes. I believe you can tell the difference in which Graziano you have by which side the bolts go into the trans but in any case you can get gear sets that will either get you more speed or more torque. It all depends on what you want to do with the cart and how much you want to spend. But remember without a good set of batteries you wont have the power to move the cart no matter if you put gears, controller or whatever...that is your engine.

Well the batteries look brand new and have A12 on them. I have tested them just as you suggested and the voltage holds. I also used a load tester for 8v batteries and they check out just fine. Assuming the batteries are good, I was woundering if it would be benificital to trade out the transmission and motor. I would like additional top end speed but dont want to loss any torque. So my guess would be to trade the motors out and leave the transmission alone.

To get the best of both worlds, you have some options, convert to an AC drive system, or get a two speed rear end, both are expensive. Or go to a 72 volt system, all three of these options will do what you are asking IMO

there are plenty of people on here with carts in the low to mid 20's for speed, and have pretty good torque on 48 volt systems, call back to D&D and ask for Vic, tell him what you want to do, he will take care of ya.

Also remember, tire size, rear gear ratio, controller amperage, battery cable size, will all play a role.

Said motor sounds like a ge d380 "bad boy" I had one in my cart and got about 25. The controller and wiring will need to be upgraded too. Get with scottyb and just let him know what exactly you want. He will make it easy

Thanks for all the help! I'm not sure I got an answer to the question above about changing the tramsimission and motor and if it will help? The motor on my Jaguar cart is a GE 3.1HP @48V #GE 5BC59JB6194D and the motor on the 98 cart is a GE 3.5 HP @48V @3300rpm #GE 5BC58JBS6221A. So i was just woundering if it would be worth the trouble to change them or not. As far as the tranmission I have no way of looking at that and seeing if there is a difference although the previous owner says it is a highspeed transimission. So again I am woundering if it would be worth the trouble to change them or not. Thanks

You do have the option of putting in a 36v motor which will improve performance by I believe up to 20% without changing controllers or gears. They are becoming quite scarce so you may have to do a bit of searching. In a series motor voltage is king.

Just to let every one know I changed out the motor and it did make a small change but was not siginficate. I also spoke with Plum Quick about which motor i shoud get them to build and they said the bigger HP motor so that was another reason to change it out. Thanks

Ok to get anyone reading this up to speed, I have a 2000 club car with stock parts. I just exchanged the original motor last Friday from a 3.1HP motor to a 3.75HP motor both stock motors. I noticed a difference in the pick up and speed immediately, I ran the golf cart on Saturday for about 1 hour around the neighborhood and again on Sunday. Then parked it until Wednesday when my wife drove it. Everything was fine but on Wednesday my wife called me and said it did not sound right so I told her to park it until I got home. Now there is a load noise when accelerating and moving. It Kinda sounds like a trunk with big knobby tires on it, the faster you go the louder the noise gets. I jacked the back end up and the sound is still there when pressing the accelator so I turned the tires with my hands and I did not get any sound. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Cart seems to run the same as over the weekend but much louder. Thanks
