Help! DS keeps blowing up armature on S/G

Ok, back in April my ds just stopped cold while out cruising. Came to a stop, put it in reverse, nothing. Was on vacation in Jekyll Island so I had a GC shop pick it up to fix, determined it was the starter/generator. Said they opened it up, hoping it was brushes and bam, was full of "feathers" (as they called them) and said the armature must have come unwound, gone to pieces. I picked it up, brought it home, ordered a new s/g, installed and it worked like a champ...

Until last night. Same deal. Had a hard time starting it after riding over to a neighbors. Got it home, went to park it, nothing.

Just opened the service plugs/covers ajd sure enough..."feathers". What gives?! For two years the cart was trouble free.

(One thing I just thought of...right before the trip to jekyll I installed a horn. Wired it in through the ignition switch. Could that in amy way cause an issue?!. It's the only thing that is different amd that was done before this occured.

Just want to solve the issue before I order amd destroy amother s/g.

Has the cart been modified in any way that would cause the genny to spin faster than originally intended? Non-stock pulley(s) or engine, maybe? -

Goid thoughts, but no, all stock, other that the club car lift and a little bigger tires/wheels.

Got into it a little and turns out the black (ground) cable was loose. So assuming that bad ground connection mayne shorted it out?

So I opened it up and here is my question... what is the grey "feathers" or what is almost like a spun insulation? What purpose does it serve? In another words if I clean all that out and away from the brushes will it work? Or is it shot, no hope?

?? Is it salvageable? If not want to get a new s/g ordered asap...

No, surprisingly no help from the forum which seemed unusual, been reading here for 2-3 yrs now. Always felt like there was a huge knowledge base.

I just ordered a new starter/gen from Rare Electric. It could possibly be rebuilt, but would have taken more time than I had, wanting to get it right as I have a buyer for the cart.

I had a cart eating sg's last year. Turned out to be a voltage regulator letting the sg go past 16 volts.
