So this is what I found. I pulled the engine. Will probably rebuild top end and replace crank seals while it is out. Anything else I ought to do while apart? (Other than clean the nasty thing up)

Yep, that's backwards, LOL ... Crank seals are always a good idea whn a 2-stroke is out anyhow, as to the rebuild on the top end I would get that piston the right-way around and see what the compression is before i spent a ton of money on a new top end ...

Cylinder off. Somebody put the piston on backwards, right? Port to intake side?

Piston and cylinder walls look okay so I'm gonna reinstall, see what happens. Need a head gasket and crank seals though

Ordered a gasket kit, the crank seals, and the shorter belt. Can't hardly wait to get it back together. My daughter ain't too happy the engine is out, but I hope she is blown away once it is rebuilt!!

Make sure the rings are right too. Bevel side goes up. Ends wrap around pins in ring grooves.

Not all of them - the first 2PG rebuild I did years and years ago resulted in Me getting them in upside-down, LOL (or maybe I'm just a special kind of stupid, who knows)

Alright. Got my seals and gaskets set in and put her back together. New plug and wire. Fired right up! Whew, she gives all she's got and just won't stop up them ol hills that gave her a problem before. Piston right way round, shorter belt, and a good cleaning got her going great. Thanks to all the folks here. I really appreciate the help!!!
