85 Gas Marathon - Poss Gear Change?
I am "restoring" a 1985 Marathon Gas cart that I just acquired, the one with the 2-cycle reversible engine (I believe it is a 244cc Robins 2pg engine).
This is for my wife who is disabled, something to allow her to get around our farm on her own. (very easily driven/controlled) I want to slow this thing down, and give it more torque for driving over rough hilly terrain. Does anybody make any kind of gear reduction add-on or some kind of recommended modification that will increase the engine-to-axle gear ratio? (my goal would be for close to 2X original) I know, everyone else wants to go faster; I could easily engineer a throttle stop to limit WOT, but it would be nice if I could gear it down for more hill-climbing and pulling power. Has anyone ever tried to do anything like this before? |

A shorter drive belt will help but not 2X original.

I would keep the tire diameter close to oem and use a shorter belt. Other than that I have nothing for you. The pinion gear is a 4 tooth. I have never seen anything so small in my life. Haha

I will definitely be staying with stock wheels/tires - nothing fancy here. We are on a shoestring budget.
I'll look into a shorter drivebelt; I guess it keeps it a little tighter on the engine pulley, keeping it closer to the center of the CVT "clutch"? |

Yes. It lowers the ratio by forcing it to shift earlier.

Re: 85 Gas Marathon - Poss Gear Change?
I did some research and discovered the belt here is 1-3/16" X 45". I have found a plethora of 43" and 44" belts out there.
I found another post here (sorry, lost the link already) that suggested going 1" shorter as being advisable. How 'bout it? Would the 43" belt be so tight as to make it impossible to get on or impossible to idle engine with cart stopped? added later: Missing link was: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/ezgo-...en-clutch.html |

I couldn't tell you from personal experience weather or not it would fit being 2 inches shorter. I do think it would really struggle to idle. Might make flat spots on the belt.
