Take the covers off the engine and see if the cooling fins are clogged with mud. This will allow the engine to overheat and lock up on the con rods. If this has happened, new rods and a cleanup of the crank will be all you need, but also as previously suggested, check oil pump pressure. Take the white wire sticking out of the engine cooling cowl near the coil, connect to one side of a lamp (12v ) and the other side of the lamp to battery +ve. obviously you need the engine to be working, the lamp will be on when not running and will turn off once running to confirm oil pressure.

It might also be worth checking that a valve has not stuck open and hitting the piston.

Its worth checking out where the fault is as these engines are too good to scrap.

Thank you CM. I plan to go ahead with the motor swap. Don't know when I'll get to tear into the "haunted" motor. LOL.
