Default Installation Order of Piston Rings

Hi. I am installing new rings on my 2003 Yamaha G22. No instructions on what order the rings go on the piston. One is marked with blue the other is marked with yellow. So is the blue ring the top or is the yellow ring the top?
Thanks!!

You really need to locate the ring instruction manual for your rings to insure they are installed correctly. Some rings are designed to be installed one way (mark facing up) and the top ring is normally chrome (molly) and has a little more end gap since it is sits on top and needs the additional gap for heat expansion.

Include is a DY 460 manual that shows the rings as an example.

Another example in enclosed manual:

Good information.

I have the new factory Yamaha rings. One has a larger gap and has a blue marking on it. The other is marked yellow. Sounds like the ring marked blue is the top.
Does that sound correct?

Looks like in the Yamaha manual that the top ring has more piston to ring side gap. Not sure if both rings are the same thickness or if the ring groove on the piston if the top is just bigger. Also, on page 185 of the same manual, it says the oil control ring is blue or white but does not say color distinction for the 1st and 2nd compression rings. Are both the 1st and 2nd ring look the same or is one on the face of the ring shiny and the other is dull in color? Shiny would generally go on top.

Usually the silver or shiny ring goes on top and if markings on the ring they face up, but once again if you have the paperwork on your rings is best to follow those guidelines. Let us know how it goes.
