Default Starter Generator Question

Hello again. I'm curious about the starter generator function on these carts.

When does the starter/gen stop starting and begin charging?

Does it start charging when the engine speed overcomes starting speed, or does it begin charging when coasting and starter is disengaged buy pedal switch?

Lastly do they open the relay to the starter windings when there is power output?

I understand the principle, just not sure of now they function on these carts.

Default Re: Starter Generator Question

Good questions, I always wondered exactly what goes on too....After a search I found this post from another member here that should clear it up;

Quote from Stinger5:
The solenoid is permanently energized when the cart is running. The S/G is just an electric motor and like any electric motor (read alternator) it can be made to run by the application of electric current or to produce electric current when driven externally. By use of a diode pack the AC current it produces is converted to DC which regenerates the battery when the SG is spinning at over 1200 rpm's. In order for it to return the supply to the battery and thus keep it charged it requires the solenoid to be permanently energized to keep the return path to battery open via the voltage regulator.

I have a 96 txt with eh 292, I replaced the starter gen twice and the regular twice. It puts out 17.5 volts and burns up the starter gen. I don't understand why. Any ideas?
