1979 EZ Go charging
I bought a project cart and the charging system has me a bit baffled. The PO has put in an ignition switch comparable to a lawn tractor and set the carb so the golf car idles. It runs fast enough to stay running but not tighten up on the belt. No problems there. The problem is that he also seemingly unhooked and discarded all of the charging system. The internal starter/generator starts the engine. The starter/generator has four wires running from it for charging. Black, yellow, green, and red. The voltage regulator is missing completely and the microswitch for the accelerator has been bypassed. There also appears to be other parts missing if I look at the 1979 manual. So my plan is to first test the generator to see if it even works, then if so to attach it to a voltage regulator and let it start charging the battery. The PO kept it on a battery charger overnight. Does anyone know what each of these four wires do? How can I determine if the generator is working without a voltage regulator as manuals suggests? And what is the easiest and simplest way to hook up a voltage regulator? I dont care if the battery charges when the engine runs in reverse. A voltage regulator from a riding mower should work since the microswitch has been bypassed etc, correct? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have the 1979 manual but many parts are missing and the wiring diagram and troubleshooting instructions rely on these parts being present. The cart runs fine, just doesnt charge the battery.
