I have a g16 running 22" tires. I do about 22MPH (GPS verified) on flat land @ 3500 rpm. The windshield is up because it is to cold to run with out it. Iwould imagine that makes a difference. I try to keep it < 3500 rpms. @ 3200 rpm I do about 18MPH. Does anybody know what rpms are in the danger zone?

I would guess 4K is the limit, if it valve floats you will not go faster unless the cart is coasting down a steep hill to go faster. Besides the cam makes so little power up there. My tires measure 23" high, and there is an identical cart that runs only 1-2 mph less than mine when he had the governor on it. With mine the last 1/4 of throttle does nothing (at the carb) like the carb is too big. That might change with some exhaust mods but I already hogged the airbox and rejetted. I can gain a tiny bit of speed going 2/3 to wot at top speed. In around a 100yds I can hit 27gps on a flat dirt driveway.

My motor is tired and rebuilding it this spring, so we will see a difference in it. It used to have more power when I got it. I run the roads once in a while but normally ~1/4 throttle and around 20-25mph, it is moving along nicely and not much work for it. I only use synthetic oil in it. I also run 12-15lb in the rear tires to make it go faster on the roads. It has no roof or windshield. I have held mine wot in neutral for a few seconds, it goes up to around the same max rpm it gets on a road and will not go higher.

I pulled the head off one motor to check it out, it looked good. It was blowing oil smoke and not starting well. Found one pushrod too tight holding the valve open a little, but the bore looks great and it had some compression yet. Must be the oil ring is gone and compression rings still working. Piston is not really loose as I have seen in cars and other engines. Plan on a .25 bore job. Valve guides were ok too, but I have no idea how the adjustment got off it was never apart and the nut was not loose.

Mine does have a top and window, and that does make a difference. And I do drive mine on pavement all the time right now (not at comp ground yet). I drive mine quite often 8 to 10 miles from home on side streets, and with the windsheld out it makes quite a difference in speed(how much I don't know). I would like to get a referance on what the rpm is, but I'm not gona buy a tach to find out. I believe I've been in the valve floating range a few times, but quite honestly, don't have a clue. It just feels like it lays over, and I jump off the throttle

Running 6 grand and over 40 in a stock cart is rare but I've done it in a 99 G16 "once!!": down hill on pavement. I bypass all my governors but I also know when to back off and keep my oil changed more than often. It's usually not a problem if you run off road all the time where speed will not be a factor. I mainly bypass mine because I can't stand the kickback and like to open it all way up when trying to climb a hill. If you can determine rpm's and know when to back off the pedal, go for it, but if you have no clue about engine rpm's, mechanic's, etc..., leave it alone and just adjust it.
well Spriddle, I think you said what I failed to put into words.. thanks for the help

He is the picture of the test I did today
28.8 MPH. as you note I reset from the garage and went down the road and back, 3th of a mile

my cart is NOT stock,
SS112 12" wheels with 23" I think...could be 22" they are all Trail tires
the governor is tweak up to rev about 4200 to 4400 rpms
have machined both secondary clutch plate, front is stock to date..
have a low budget K&N filter attached directly to the carb
I have open up the carb bore and knifed the blades and have change screws and polished bore and flow benched for best flow
I have lighten the fly wheel and filed down the key to bump the timing about 2 or 3 degree more in timing
lightening the fly wheel is your best performance for the buck spent.greatly increases throttle response and takes off much better
the motor is old but does run strong... this is a 1995 G14

as for the RPM's when valve float, I have played with that in years past,
depending on engine model and age of valve springs,I never seen any below 5,000 but have seen some around 6,000
newer engines do have stronger springs than the older ones.

as for what is bad, well.
that's hard to answer, but most small engine are designed to run around 3,600 for long periods
so going a few over is no problem, the more you go over the shorter time you want to be full throttle...
the more wear on your motor mean the less it can take for rpm's
so as I had said before USE COMMON SENSE.... or it will cost you a lot of money

I know many like to hook the pedal direct to the carb, but unless you want to be able to go till the valves float there is no need
if adjust right, you will get full throttle until the governor kicks in and pulls throttle back, but that only happens when you hit its limit

I see some one asked about using a tach, some automotive Timing lights have a tach built in, I have a digital one from Snap On, that will work, you just hook up to the plug wire and to you battery.. real simple...

an easy way to set the governor is to lift the rear wheels on for the ground and push the pedal down and see what you get and then adjust from there, just note that with no load you will get a quick spike but will settle back a few hundred to were the limit is...
also you can test where you valves float if you really want to know.

I use a winch mounted on a I Beam in the shop with 2 strap to the back of the cart.
you can even use an engine host as well with a strap as well, have also done it this way a few times
you can use blocks, but be real careful the cart don't fall off and having the front end close to a wall is not bad just in case of a mishap
