Low speed mixture screw. Mine was turned all the way in (off). I backed it out a bit, but then what happens is when I coast downhill off the throttle, then go to press the throttle again I get a big backfire out the exhaust. It starts better and runs better at partial throttle, but can't stand the backfires. So I've turned it back into 1/2 turn out. Think I need to find a balance of idle setting and low speed mix to make it a comprimise.

CP8, you can get rid of the backfires by adjusting the throttle stop screw so the butterfly is closing all the way when off the pedal.
It must close to a stop in the carb, not on the stop screw.

Brad, I'm not familiar with a mixture screw that has a nut on it, Can you post a picture of it?

Thanks crash, thought I put it back to norm when I rebuilt the carb. But after testing it was hanging up a bit returning to idle. So moved the locking collar down the cable like 0.020" and the throttle set all the way closed. Now fattened up the low-speed jet a bit and running very nice ... without the backfires.

For the OP (original poster), I'll try to take pics of my '85 soon. I feel pretty sure that the Needle with locking nut is the low-speed mix, but I'll post up for everyone else to comment. Mine is set just over a turn out now.

I'd guess this is what the OP was talking about. Low-speed mixture screw. This is on my 1985 Marathon
