I have a similar speedometer on my on road bicycle. The sensor needed to be mounted on the front wheel so that it can talk to the computer at the handle bar. Of course the one I have is wireless. I guess that if you used a wired one and extended the wires it could be mounted on rear. which ever one you use it is unbelievably important that the magnet be 1mm from the sensor or it will not work. good luck
