Set the idle really low, barely more than the gen turns it to start, that will help. Also lube/clean the clutches. My primary will start to drag the belt when it needs lube. Make sure the pedal cable has enough slack you can idle it.

I think the stock ignition has zero advance at idle speeds, then advances the timing above 1K rpm. I don't think it has a compression release?
