Default Backfire and I believe it is loading up

I bought a g16 97 model cart a few months ago that was not running. The guy replaced the coil and carb. I got the cart running in early nov. it has ran fine for the time I have had it, except I had to put brushes in the starter motor. All of the sudden Saturday afternoon it went to backfiring and will not start (will spin over). If you wait a while it will start and run for a little and seems to run if you hold the choke for while. I swapped back to the other carb and it still acts up. Seems to be worse after warm. I notice there is black carbon on top of the carb at the joint area.
Now my question is can the carb be out of adjustment as it does have an after market exhaust or is it the joint. I want to find the specs for the carb screws so i can adjust to factory specs and should I replace the joint and the gaskets? Any help to finds the specs would help. Also any ideas will be investigated.

Thanks
Scott Ross

It could be a vacuum leak or dirt in the carb. Loading up, or running rich, usually doesn't cause popping and backfire. Running lean will cause backfire. I suspect a leak in the carb boot/flange. Check that first. Then take the carb out and clean it really good, get some carb passage tools, look like little metal toothpicks, and clean out the holes. I usually run my carbs under hot water and use a degreaser like simple green. Run the water through it backwards, as in the opposite way air would flow. This will back flush any dirt/sand.

If that doesn't cure it you could be out of time. You'd have to pull the flywheel and check the stator to see if it's adjusted one way or the other and if the screws are loose. If loose, the timing plate can move itself.

Thanks. I am going to replace the joint and gaskets for the carb as it is simple and cheap enough. Reset all carb needles and checked the butterfly.
The back fire happens when deaccel or fast stop. But the butter fly is dripping wet when I remove it just after it starts running bad.
I will update when I replace the gaskets and joint.

Thanks

Could it be the valve's out of adjustment? Fuel in the carb might mean the valves aren't seating. Can u put your hand over the carb while cranking and feel any air puffing out?

Popping out the exhaust when slowing from speed is lean idle. Valve issues can cause backfiring/popping you can check compression and lash.

Lean idle could be the carb or an air leak, even a valve leaking but less likely to have a valve problem than those.

I would also check float level and float needle valve leaking, if the butterfly is dripping wet. New gaskets are always a good idea. I believe all golf carts are finicky when it comes to air leaks, so they don't suck dirty air/grass into the motor and shorten the life span.

Float (total guess here) I think, is suppose to be level with the seating surface of the bowl, when inverted. (Some of the smart guys won't hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong)! but lord knows, I deserve it!!

Keep at it, you'll get it!

Just thinking, If you have an aftermarket muffler on, that is going to alter what main jet is in the carb. but you need to check all that these guys have mentioned here before you try to read the plug for a lean condition, due to the increased capacity of the muffler.
