1990 Yamaha G2 tune up questions.
I just ordered a tune up kit for the g2, but I had a couple questions. Right now my golf cart doesn't have the correct gas cap on it. I bought one from a member on here. Is there suppose to be a vent line going from the gas cap to somewhere else? Also where does the fuel filter go in this cart? I can't seem to find one on my cart. Does a usual tune up not include the plug wire? The kit I bought didn't. I didn't know if I should try to get a plug wire too. Is there not an oil filter on the cart either? What weight oil is recommended for this cart? Any help would be great. Thanks

Re: 1990 Yamaha G2 tune up questions.
The gas cap should not have a vent hose off the cap. The stock fuel filter is in the tank at the very bottom. As suggested by many on the site, scrap this inferior design and run an in-line filter between the tank and engine.
The cart does not have an oil filter and I run Mobil One Synthetic 10w-30 in mine. One thing to remember you only need one quart. Good Luck! |

Re: 1990 Yamaha G2 tune up questions.
I have a '92 G9 and never have changed the fuel filter lol, now have a clone engine in the cart running fine. I also run a lawn type filter inline mostly so I can see the fuel flow, though now I have fuel line I can see through anyway. The filter is fairly large and screws into the bottom of the tank where the line goes to. I don't think the plug wire comes out of the coil, but you may be able to put a new boot on the wire if you need to. I also ran synthetic 10-30 in my cart for over 10 years but it still wore out lol. Some say you should run lawn/diesel/offroad racing oil now due to them taking zinc out of the road oils. They say its better for splash engines. Yes, one quart only is the proper amount of oil, where ever it is on the dipstick that is full mark. You put more in and it will transfer to your airbox.

Re: 1990 Yamaha G2 tune up questions.
Thanks for the help guys. So should I look for the oil with zinc in it? Or just run like a good full synthetic? I know they always said that zinc was best for the older engines, before the rollers...

Re: 1990 Yamaha G2 tune up questions.
I'm with Sho, fuel flow through the in tank filter is so slow, nothing could get lodged in it. My in tank filter is probably 20 yrs. old, I washed it out in gas 4 yrs. ago.
The coil wire is not replaceable. Don't try to remove it from the coil. 10/30 or 5/30 on oil, depending on temp. one quart only. |

Some say a splash lube engine should have the old style (now offroad) oil with zinc. Does it make a difference, well I don't know. I also heard they used a new environmentally safe foam on the space shuttle gas tank once....but I don't really know for sure. I do know splash engines can have a harder time lubricating at high rpm, so if you don't run it hard likely it will not matter. Synthetic was a no brainer for me, it costs a couple bucks more per oil change and is the best oil. It handles heat better like an air cooled engine may have, and you can change it less because it breaks down slower. An engine that burns oil will burn more synthetic, it tends to be thinner. I may have to research zinc more but no time to do it now. |
