Rewire charger handle and recepticle

I just got a 1997 marathon 36 volt cart. I cleaned up all the battery cables, put on a few new ends, some were very caroded, got the cart up and running, most of the batteries had been neglected, no distilled water in the cells, decided to spray some electric contact cleaner on the plug and recepticle, oh what a mistake. It destroyed the handle and recepticle, you would not believe it, it made the plastic just brittle and fell aart, I ordered and received new handle and plug part, new recepticle and plug recepticle part, I am lost as to how to tell on the wires that go into the plug handle Anderson, which one is the plus and which one is the negative, is the plus gold and the silver negative, kind of dumb huh. Same on the wires going into the plug recepticle. I guess i could trace them back to the batteries in the cart right. I do know one is + and one is -.

I did a search on this and did not find anything.

The black wire should be negative, but people have been know to use whatever color wire is handy when rewiring carts and chargers, so trace them out to be sure.
