Extremely low batteries
Was asked to try to get an '03 Club Car going. Batts had been left off charger for long time. Total for 6 batts was under 2 volts. I doubt it will work.
Charged each with 12 volt charger one at a time for 6-8 minutes up to 5.8 - 6 volts. Plugged in charger and no go. Hooked 12 volt charger up to last batt and tried again and cart charger started. (powercharge III) Amps were at about 3. After about 2 hrs on charger volts were up to 58-60. Disconnected charger from wall outlet and volts dropped down towards 25 volts. Run/Tow switch has been turned to Tow during this effort. My question is how long should I allow charger to run like this. Is there a danger of damaging the charger? I was hoping to get cart to run at least to check it out as they want to sell it. They were just going to go out and buy a new set of batts to see if it would work. Cart is in showroom shape and batts look new. Owners health deteriorated and cart left unplugged. She doesn't remember when cart used last or when batts were purchased. |

Re: Extremely low batteries
As long as the cart charger is charging it will take up to 16 hours to charge the batteries. Then they might not hold the charge, but should allow you to see if the cart works.

Re: Extremely low batteries
Thanks , Old Sky, for the reply.
I have experienced the very long charge times with other carts. Did a 36 volt EZGO a few weeks ago that were down to 1.8 volts. Did the 2 by 2 charge and got it back and the cart is running, although I have not had the cart available to check the run time. Told owner not to expect batteries to last much longer. On this CC I have not turned the switch back to Run yet. Trying to remember what all I have read on the OBC and how exactly that effects the charger. Will the charger be damaged without the r/t turned to run? |

Re: Extremely low batteries
Should I go ahead and just reprogram the OBC to make sure what status it is in??
When the charger was at highest point yesterday, about58 volts, I disconnected and turned r/t to run. turned key and put in reverse, heard relay click when I pressed go pedal, but no movement. Batts were were settled to 25 volts very quickly. |

Re: Extremely low batteries
To reset the obc just unhook the batteries for about 10 minutes, then re hook. Allow the charger to charge the batteries fully. Can take up to 16 hours. Unhook charger at this time and try cart. Make sure water in batteries cover the plates. Recharge the batteries. Sometimes these batteries take three or four times charging for 16 hours to really get them to full charge. If the charger will not turn off after 16 hours charging the batteries are just too far gone.

Re: Extremely low batteries
Disconnected charger and reconnected last Fri. 5:30 pm for 10 minutes and reconnected. This morning at 9 am charger had turned off. I am not sure how long. Batteries checked about 45 volts. Cart attempted move. reconnected charger and will see tomorrow.
Yes, batteries are proper water level, clean and tight. I cannot find any mark as to year of installation and the owner can't remember any details about purchase of cart or batteries. Batteries look new and plates look good. A few more charging cycles to see if everything looks good and someone will get a nice cart that just needs batteries. |
